2 Taiwanese electronic companies enter world\u2019s top PC vendors

On January 26, 2020, Gartner, a global market information advisory firm, released its rankings of the world’s top computer manufacturers in terms of shipments, with Taipei-based Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc. once again making it to the list of the top 10. The two Taiwanese companies maintained high rankings despite a slight decline in their shares in 2019.

Acer remained the fifth largest PC vendor in the world, with a total delivery of 14.76 million computer units last year, while Asustek sustained its sixth place with 14.48 million PCs sold. The rankings were based on data from 2019, which showed that Acer’s global market share dropped to 5.7% from 6.1%, and Asustek’s share fell to 5.5% from 5.9%.

The decline in market share for Acer and Asustek did not seem to affect the sum of global shipments, as PC deliveries at the international level grew 0.6% last year compared to the data in 2018. According to Gartner senior principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa, this growth is expected to continue through 2020, even after Windows 7 support comes to an end.

Kitagawa said, “We expect this growth to continue through this year even after Windows 7 support comes to an end this month, as many businesses in emerging regions such as China, Eurasia and the emerging Asia/Pacific have not yet upgraded.” This statement suggests that the demand for new PCs will remain strong, driven by the need for businesses to upgrade their hardware and software. The global PC market rankings for 2019 showed that Chinese multinational manufacturer Lenovo Group Ltd. claimed the first place, with shipments of 62.97 million units.

Three American companies acquired the second, third, and fourth ranks, with HP Inc. shipping 57.92 million units, Dell Inc. delivering 43.96 million PCs, and Apple Inc. trading 18.35 million units. Acer and Asustek followed closely, with Acer shipping 14.76 million units and Asustek delivering 14.48 million PCs. The rankings demonstrate the intense competition in the global PC market, with companies from different regions vying for market share.

The end of Windows 7 support in January 2020 was expected to have a significant impact on the global PC market. Many businesses, particularly in emerging regions, had not yet upgraded their hardware and software, and the need to do so was expected to drive demand for new PCs. As Kitagawa noted, this demand is expected to continue through 2020, despite the end of Windows 7 support.

The upgrade cycle is likely to benefit PC manufacturers, including Acer and Asustek, which are well-positioned to meet the demand for new hardware. Looking ahead, the global PC market is expected to continue growing, driven by the need for businesses to upgrade their hardware and software.

The demand for new PCs will be driven by emerging regions, where many businesses have not yet upgraded their technology. According to Kitagawa, the growth in PC shipments will continue through 2020, despite the end of Windows 7 support. The future outlook for Acer and Asustek is positive, as they are well-positioned to meet the demand for new hardware and software.

With their strong rankings in the global PC market, they are likely to continue to play a significant role in the industry. The rankings of the world’s top computer manufacturers in terms of shipments demonstrate the intense competition in the global PC market.

Despite a decline in market share, Acer and Asustek remain major players in the industry, and their ability to adapt to changing market trends will be crucial to their success. With the demand for new PCs expected to continue growing, driven by the need for businesses to upgrade their hardware and software, the future outlook for the global PC market is positive.

As companies like Acer and Asustek continue to innovate and meet the demand for new technology, they are likely to remain major players in the industry for years to come.
