NAGQU, October 22, 2026 — A powerful earthquake struck northern Tibet on Thursday, killing at least 16 people and triggering rescue efforts amid disrupted communications and weather. The quake, which had a magnitude of 7, collapsed hundreds of homes in the northern regional city of Nagqu, according to official media.
Immediate Aftermath
The earthquake, which occurred at 10:33 p.m. local time, had its epicenter 119 miles east-northeast of Nagqu, in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area of northern Tibet, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake’s depth was 11 miles, which is considered shallow and more destructive. Notably, the earthquake was the strongest to hit the region in the last five years, as reported by China’s national broadcaster CCTV. For all the noise, the salient point is that at least 16 people were killed, and 46 to 54 were injured, with 11 of the injured in serious condition, according to the Nagqu media office.
Rescue Efforts
More than 1,600 people from the local county were deployed for rescue efforts, with supplies including 1,000 prefabricated housing units, around 3,000 tents, and folding beds, as well as flashlights and winter clothing, arriving in the region. It would seem that the rescue efforts are ongoing, with disaster relief officials assessing the scale of the damage, as reported by state news agency Xinhua. The local government has also taken emergency actions to halt trains passing through the region, and a section of National Highway 317 has been closed due to rockfalls, allowing only emergency, rescue, and official support vehicles through.
Infrastructure Damage
The earthquake caused significant infrastructure damage, with power and communication lines disrupted in part of the region, according to Xinhua. The quake also caused rockfalls that forced local authorities to close a section of National Highway 317, as reported by China’s official news agency. The mountainous area is sparsely populated, but the earthquake still managed to collapse at least 339 residential buildings and 20 livestock sheds, according to local government officials. The U.S. Geological Survey noted that the earthquake’s epicenter is around 190 kilometers northeast of Nagqu, a city around 300 kilometers north of the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.
Seismic Context
Earthquakes are relatively common in China, and the region has experienced several significant quakes in recent years. In January 2025, a quake near Mount Everest in Tibet’s Tingri region killed at least 126 people, according to reports. In 2010, at least 2,698 people were killed when a magnitude 7.1 quake hit Qinghai province, which neighbors Tibet. The salient point is that the region is prone to earthquakes, and the latest quake is a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and response. As the region braces for intermittent snows over the next three days, the rescue efforts will likely face additional challenges, according to Xinhua.
Local Government Response
The Nagqu local government has activated its emergency response plan, coordinating with national disaster relief agencies to manage the crisis, according to the Nagqu media office. Officials have emphasized the importance of rapid deployment of resources to affected areas, ensuring that displaced residents receive immediate shelter and essential supplies. The government has also initiated efforts to restore communication networks, which were severely disrupted following the quake, as reported by Xinhua.
Local authorities have set up temporary shelters for those displaced by the disaster, with officials on the ground working to assess the needs of affected communities. In addition, medical teams have been dispatched to treat the injured, with particular attention given to the 11 individuals in serious condition, as noted by the Nagqu media office. The government has also issued warnings about the potential for further seismic activity, urging residents to remain cautious and follow official instructions for safety.
