On 1 April 2020, Tokyo‑based SoftBank Corp. entered the Japanese 5G arena, joining NTT Docomo and KDDI Corp. in the country’s high‑speed mobile race. The launch targets users who demand seamless video playback and gaming experiences, with company president Ken Miyauchi pledging a focus on delivering premium 5G service.

SoftBank’s new network promises data speeds up to one hundred times faster than the existing 4G infrastructure. In practice, a two‑hour film could be downloaded in only a few seconds on a compatible smartphone. Beyond consumer use, the bandwidth is positioned to support industrial and medical applications, including autonomous‑vehicle communication and remote clinical procedures.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications highlighted that the allocation of 5G spectrum will be a key driver for Japan’s digital‑economy growth, underscoring the strategic importance of the rollout.

Competitive Landscape

Rakuten Inc., which entered the mobile market in April, announced plans to launch its own 5G service in June. Analysts anticipate that the entrance of this new player will intensify competition, potentially leading to better offerings and lower prices for consumers. Takashi Tanaka, a telecom analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, noted that fresh entrants are likely to spur innovation and elevate service quality.

Deployment Details and Pricing

SoftBank’s 5G coverage will expand nationwide over the coming years, but the initial rollout is limited to selected locations within seven prefectures, including the major urban centers of Tokyo and Osaka. The company will charge an extra ¥1,000 (approximately US$9) per month for the service. However, both existing and new subscribers are exempt from this fee for a two‑year promotional period that ends in August, according to SoftBank spokesperson Junichi Miyakawa.

Regulatory Approval

The Japanese communications ministry has granted spectrum licences to SoftBank and its fellow operators after they satisfied the required conditions. This approval is expected to foster a competitive environment and stimulate further innovation in the telecom sector. A ministry representative reiterated the government’s commitment to nurturing a regulatory framework that supports the nation’s digital‑economy ambitions.

Outlook for Japan’s 5G Future

SoftBank’s CEO Masayoshi Son expressed confidence that the company will play a leading role in shaping Japan’s digital future. The rapid deployment of 5G is projected to position the country at the forefront of emerging technologies such as autonomous driving, remote healthcare, and smart‑city initiatives. Continued governmental encouragement of competition and innovation should translate into improved services and more affordable options for Japanese consumers.

With SoftBank, NTT Docomo, KDDI, and the upcoming Rakuten 5G networks, Japan’s telecom landscape is set for a transformative period, promising significant economic and societal benefits as the nation embraces the next generation of mobile connectivity.
