Long Thanh International Airport Construction Site

The Vietnamese government has set an ambitious target to commence construction on the Long Thanh International Airport by August of this year. This initiative, located in Dong Nai province, aims to alleviate pressure on Ho Chi Minh Citys existing infrastructure and serve as a critical hub for the nations southern economic region. To meet this deadline, officials are accelerating disbursement processes and site clearance operations.

The central government allocated VN?11.49 trillion, equivalent to approximately US$490 million, during the 2018-2019 period specifically for this project. As of January, provincial authorities had already released VN?1.176 trillion or about US$50.1 million from that allocation.

The remaining capital will be disbursed before the year concludes to ensure the timeline remains on track. Dong Nai provincial authorities have indicated a strong commitment to hastening the release of funds required for the massive undertaking. A total compensation package of around VN?18 trillion, or roughly US$782.5 million, is necessary to support the resettlement of 5,000 affected households.

The government intends to finalize approval for site clearance while simultaneously advancing the construction of new residential areas in Loc An and Binh Son districts. These new settlement zones are already in place, creating a clear path forward for relocating residents who will be displaced by the airport footprint.

The financial timeline is critical to the overall project schedule. By ensuring that the remaining capital from the central allocation is released promptly, officials aim to remove bureaucratic bottlenecks that could delay physical construction. This accelerated approach reflects a broader national strategy to modernize air travel infrastructure and support economic growth in the southern region.

The coordination between local and central levels is being managed closely to address any logistical or financial hurdles that might arise during the transition from planning to active building phases.

Managing Resettlement and Social Impact

A significant portion of the project involves the social management required to move thousands of families out of the designated construction zone. The compensation amount of VN?18 trillion represents a substantial investment in human capital and community stability. Beyond simple financial payouts, the administration is working on educational assistance funds for students who will be relocated due to the project.

This measure aims to mitigate the disruption caused to local schooling systems and ensure that displaced children can continue their education without significant interruption. Labor opportunities are another key component of the social plan.

The construction phase is expected to generate a large number of jobs for local workers, providing employment in a region where infrastructure development often drives economic activity. By prioritizing local hiring and training, the project seeks to turn a potential source of displacement into an opportunity for regional workforce development. These efforts are designed to maintain social harmony while executing one of the largest engineering projects in Dong Nai province history.

Strategic Importance for National Aviation Goals

The Long Thanh International Airport is designated as a key national project with far-reaching implications for Vietnam s aviation sector. Once fully operational, it is expected to open its gates to the public by 2025. At that time, the new facility will significantly reduce the load on Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Currently, Tan Son Nhat accommodates up to 100 million passengers annually and handles five million tonnes of cargo every year. As international travel demand grows and domestic tourism expands, the capacity constraints at Tan Son Nhat have become a limiting factor for economic expansion.

Vietnam s Ministry of Transport is closely coordinating with provincial authorities to ensure that all problems are addressed promptly. This collaboration is essential for keeping the project on schedule and within budget. The ministry s involvement highlights the strategic importance of the airport not just as a local infrastructure upgrade but as a vital link in the nations broader transportation network.

Successful completion of this project will enhance connectivity, attract foreign investment, and support the export-oriented industries that drive the southern economy. The scale of the Long Thanh project show its role as a transformative element for Dong Nai province.

It is the largest ever undertaking in the region and is a model for future infrastructure developments across Vietnam. The government s decision to prioritize speed in disbursement and clearance processes demonstrates a clear intent to realize this vision within the current fiscal year. As construction ramps up, the focus remains on balancing rapid progress with careful management of human and financial resources.
