Kamal Nath's Decade After Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Resignation

Kamal Nath, a veteran Indian politician, has been rebuilding his influence in Madhya Pradesh after resigning as Chief Minister in 2020. Notably, his career in national politics spans several decades, with him first being elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980. He was born in Kanpur on 18 November 1946 into a merchant family, and his father, Mahendra Nath, established firms involved in various industries, including film distribution and publishing.

Early Rise In National Politics

Nath’s political career began to take shape when he was re-elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984, and subsequently to the 9th and 10th Lok Sabhas in 1989 and 1991, respectively. He was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers as Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests in June 1991. For all the noise surrounding his political journey, the salient point is that he has consistently held key positions, including serving as Union Minister of State for Textiles from 1995 to 1996 and as Union Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Industry from 2004 to 2009.

Chief Minister Of Madhya Pradesh And Resignation

Nath was elected president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee in May 2018 and led the party to victory in the November-December 2018 assembly election. He assumed the office of Chief Minister on 17 December 2018 but resigned on 20 March 2020 due to a lack of majority in the government. It would seem that this setback did not deter him, as he went on to serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from March 2020 to April 2022.

Controversies And Current Standing

However, Nath’s career has not been without controversy. Notably, he was seen among mobs during the anti-Sikh pogrom in 1984, following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. According to a report by Organiser, Congress leaders, including Nath, were involved in the violence. The situation at the Gurudwara remained grave, with evidence showing Nath was in the mob around 2 p.m. Furthermore, recent controversies have linked him to the death of a cheetah cub in Sheopur district, with senior advocate Aditya Sanghi seeking a CBI probe into the matter, citing the state government’s responsibility.

Recent Developments And Future Trajectory

Despite these challenges, Nath remains a significant figure in Madhya Pradesh politics. The Congress government in the state fell in March 2020 after several party MLAs left the party, with Sajjan Singh Verma blaming Digvijaya Singh for the government’s fall. Currently, Nath is facing new political challenges in his home state, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav asking students if Pakistan could come to India and set off bombs. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Nath’s next move will be closely watched. On 21 and 22 December, the state government is preparing for a two-day meeting of ministers to review three years of government work and discuss plans for the coming year, a development that may shed more light on Nath’s future trajectory.
