Malaysia unlikely to go into recession due to economic diversification

The economic stability of Malaysia has significant implications for the wider region, as its diversified economy is likely to have a ripple effect on neighboring countries. According to Bursa Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Malaysia’s economy is not likely to slip into a recession due to its pragmatic and responsive policies, as well as its diversified structure. This is a crucial factor for the region, as a stable Malaysian economy can help mitigate the impact of global economic volatility on other countries.

The services sector, which accounts for 57 percent of Malaysia’s gross domestic product, and the manufacturing sector, which contributes 24.3 percent, are the main drivers of the country’s economy. In contrast, the agriculture and mining sectors now only contribute 14 percent to Malaysia’s gross domestic product.

This diversification, combined with a range of trading partners, adds to the country’s economic resilience. As Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar noted, “The diversity of our trading partners, where we are not overly dependent on one particular country, adds to our economic resilience.”

Economic Resilience and Stability

Malaysia’s financial system is also a key factor in its economic resilience. The country is home to the world’s leading Islamic capital market, with a value of RM2.2 trillion, representing almost two-thirds of the total capital markets. The financial system is complemented by well-functioning debt and equity capital markets, which were worth RM3.5 trillion as of June 30, 2022.

The debt capital market accounted for RM1.8 trillion, while the equity capital market made up RM1.7 trillion. The strength and stability of the financial system are important factors in Malaysia’s resilience, with local banks being well capitalized, liquid, better managed, and effectively regulated and supervised by Bank Negara Malaysia.

The banking sector is a significant contributor to Malaysia’s economy, with seven major banks – Maybank, Public Bank, CIMB Bank, Hong Leong Bank, RHB Bank, and Alliance Bank – having a combined market capitalization of RM325.36 billion, or about 20 percent of the total market capitalization of RM1.65 trillion as at end-June 2022. These banks continue to fulfill their intermediation role by mobilizing funds to be channeled to productive sectors of the economy.

Global Economic Trends

Despite Malaysia’s economic resilience, the country is not immune to global economic trends. The United States-China trade tensions and the Ukraine-Russia conflict have caused commodity prices and logistics costs to skyrocket, resulting in high inflationary pressures globally. This has forced central banks to tighten their monetary policy to rein in inflation, which is likely to cause economic slowdown and potential recessions in some countries in 2023. As Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar noted, these global trends will have a significant impact on the global economy, and Malaysia’s economic stability will be an important factor in mitigating their effects.

Looking Ahead

As the global economy continues to evolve, it will be important to watch how Malaysia’s economic stability affects the wider region. The country’s diversified economy, combined with its strong financial system and resilient banking sector, make it an important player in the regional economy. As the world navigates the challenges of global economic volatility, Malaysia’s economic stability will be an important factor to watch. In the coming months, it will be crucial to monitor how the country’s economy performs, and how its stability affects the region. With its strong economic fundamentals, Malaysia is well positioned to weather the challenges of global economic volatility, and its economic stability will be an important factor in shaping the regional economy in the years to come.
